How to Unblur a Picture
Published November 4, 2026
A blurry picture is not always a lost picture. Depending on how it got blurry, a slider in your phone’s photo app may be enough, a sharpen filter on a computer may help, or you may need an AI tool that rebuilds the detail. This guide walks through each option, from the free tools you already have to the cases where nothing will bring the photo back.
Why pictures get blurry
Before you try to fix a picture, work out why it is blurry. The fix depends on the cause.
- Motion blur. The camera or the subject moved while the shutter was open. Edges smear in one direction and small lights become streaks.
- Missed focus. The lens focused at the wrong distance. Nothing is stretched; everything is evenly soft, often with a sharp background behind a soft face.
- Low light. In the dark the camera uses a slow shutter and high sensitivity, so you get a mix of blur and grain.
- Low resolution and compression. A picture that was small to begin with, or that was shrunk by a chat app, looks blocky and soft when you zoom in.
Zoom in on a point of light or a hard edge to tell them apart. A line means motion; a soft round blob means focus; blocks and halos mean compression.
How to unblur a picture on iPhone
The Photos app on iPhone has two adjustments that help with mild softness.
- Open the picture in Photos and tap Edit.
- Under Adjust, scroll to Sharpness and drag it to the right.
- Try Definition as well, which adds contrast in the midtones and makes edges look crisper.
- Tap Done. You can always go back to the original from Edit with Revert.
These sliders raise the contrast along edges. They work on slightly soft photos, but they can’t undo real motion blur or a missed focus: pushed too far, they make the blur look jagged and add noise.
How to unblur a picture on Android
Most Android phones come with Google Photos. Open the picture, tap Edit, and look under the adjustment tools for a sharpen control. On recent Google Pixel phones, Google Photos may also offer an Unblur suggestion, which uses AI on the device. Other manufacturers’ gallery apps usually have a similar sharpen or detail slider in their edit screen; the name varies from phone to phone.
As on iPhone, a sharpen slider is a contrast tool. Use it gently and compare with the original before you save.
How to unblur a picture on a computer without AI
Desktop editors such as GIMP and Photoshop have sharpening filters that give you more control than a phone slider. The most useful one is usually called Unsharp Mask, despite the name. It has three main settings:
- Amount sets how strong the sharpening is.
- Radius sets how wide an area around each edge is affected. Keep it small for fine detail.
- Threshold stops the filter from sharpening flat areas, which keeps skin and sky from turning grainy.
Start with a small radius and a moderate amount, zoom to full size, and raise the values slowly.
Without AI, every one of these filters works the same way: it makes existing edges stronger. That is why they help a soft picture but struggle with heavy blur, where the edges themselves are gone.
How to unblur a picture with an AI tool
AI tools take a different approach. Instead of boosting the edges that are left, an AI model looks at the whole picture and redraws the detail the blur hid: the outline of an eye, single hairs, the shapes of letters. This is how most people fix motion blur, missed focus and old low-resolution pictures today.
With UnblurPix it takes three steps:
- Upload the picture. Open the UnblurPix unblur tool and drop, paste or pick the photo. JPG, PNG, WEBP and iPhone HEIC files all work.
- Let it check the blur. Your browser measures the blur, finds faces and text, and picks a mode such as Motion, Focus, Portrait or Text. You can change it.
- Compare and download. Use the slider to compare with the original, move the Fidelity slider if the result went too far, and download.
Standard unblurs are free, 2 a day without an account, with no watermark. Every result is checked against your photo, and if faces, colors or layout drifted, UnblurPix redoes it once for free.
The catch with any AI tool is that it rebuilds plausible detail rather than recovering lost detail. Always compare faces and text with your original.
When a picture can’t be unblurred
Some pictures are beyond repair, with or without AI:
- Too little left. If a face is only a few pixels wide, or the shake turned the subject into a long smear, there isn’t enough information for anyone to rebuild the real thing. An AI result would be a guess that only looks right.
- Nearly black or burned out. A photo that recorded almost no light, or one where the bright parts are pure white, has no detail to bring back.
- Blurred or pixelated on purpose. Faces, number plates and text that someone blurred or pixelated to hide them can’t be recovered; the detail was removed, not hidden. Tools that claim otherwise are inventing what they show. UnblurPix doesn’t allow unmasking people who chose to stay hidden, or removing watermarks from pictures you don’t own.
If you can, take the picture again: hold the phone steady with both hands, tap the subject to focus, and add light instead of relying on night mode.
Questions people ask
How do I unblur an already blurred image?
Find out why it is blurry first. For slight softness, raise Sharpness in your phone’s photo editor or use Unsharp Mask on a computer. For motion blur, missed focus or a low-resolution picture, use an AI unblur tool, which redraws the lost edges instead of only boosting what is left.
How can I remove blur from a photo?
Sharpen sliders and filters remove a little softness by boosting edges. Removing real motion blur or a missed focus needs an AI tool that redraws the detail, and that is also the quickest route for most phone photos.
Can blur be removed completely?
Light and moderate blur can usually be removed well enough that the photo looks sharp. Strong blur can be reduced, but the result contains detail the AI rebuilt, not the original detail. Deliberate blurring and pixelation can’t be reversed.
Can ChatGPT unblur a picture?
General AI chat assistants that can create images can redraw a picture that looks sharper, but they usually regenerate the whole image, so faces, text and small details can change. A dedicated unblur tool is told to keep the picture the same and only remove the blur, and UnblurPix also checks the result against your original.
How do I unblur a picture on iPhone for free?
Use Photos: tap Edit, then raise Sharpness and Definition. For stronger blur, open UnblurPix in Safari, upload the photo and save the result to Photos. Standard unblurs are free every day.
Can I unblur a picture without a watermark?
Yes. Phone editors and desktop filters never add one, and UnblurPix results come without a watermark too, including the free Standard results.
